Chamonix Town
Chamonix is often mentioned in the same breath as other Alpine 'resorts' such as Courcheval, St Anton and Verbier. 'Resort' however, implies that it is only open for business at limited times of the year and this is far from the truth.
Chamonix is a lively, bustling Alpine town that doesn't rely just on the ski season for its raison d'être. Purists from all sporting backgrounds make the trek, whether they're into climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, rafting, parapenting, tennis, golf or just relaxing in a convivial environment.
So, because of its permanence, Chamonix has some of the best facilities, shops, bars and restaurants to be found anywhere in the Alps. Many French ski resorts have been heavily chastised for their lack of après when compared to their frenzied Austrian counterparts. Yet, in Chamonix locations such as Chambre Neuf and La Terrasse will match them shot for shot.
For the gourmands amongst you, there is plenty to tickle the taste buds – everything from the odd Michelin star to more down to earth Savoyard fondues. [There are even establishments that cater for the cuisine Philistines and I admit to being tempted on occasion by the odd fast food outlet!]
The shops boast enough designer kit to delight and terrify in equal measure, depending on whose credit card it is and most of this is all a short walk apart – with an abundance of cafes and bars to hand if sustenance is required.
Chamonix also has plenty for children if the skiing isn't enough. Husky sledding, tobogganing, snow shoeing and ice skating are just a sample of the activities available and who knows, they may tempt the odd parent too.
Ski Daktari will be delighted to provide further details on any of the leisure activities and for most it will be possible to pre-book before your arrival.
